What Happens If You Leave Gum Disease Remain Untreated?
If gingivitis remain untreated, the gum condition can advance to a more serious and advance stage of gum disease called periodontitis, meaning there is an inflammation around the teeth. In the advance form of gum disease, the gums are actually pulling away from the teeth and bacteria are forming infected pockets. As the plaque spreads and grows below the gumline, the immune system of the body fights bacteria. Bacterial toxins and the body's enzymes fighting the infection actually begin to gradually destroy the bone and connective tissue that holds teeth in place. Unless given treatment, the bones, gums and connective tissue that supports teeth are destroyed. Eventually, teeth may become loose and have to be removed.
